In year 1997 we first time entered in Jim Corbett Park with British Cycle Expedition named “Cycle the Ganges” and explored its richness in wildlife. This famous reserve was established in 1936 as India’s first national park. Originally called Hailey National Park, then Ramganga National Park, it was renamed in 1957 after legendary tiger hunter Jim Corbett (1875–1955), who put Kumaon on the map with his book The Man-Eaters of Kumaon. The British hunter was greatly revered by local people for shooting tigers that had developed a taste for human flesh, but he eventually shot more wildlife with his camera than with his gun.
Edward James Corbett CIE VD (25 July 1875 – 19 April 1955) was a British hunter, tracker and conservationist, author and naturalist, who hunted a large number of man-eating tigers and leopards in India.
Corbett held the rank of colonel in the British Indian Army and was frequently called upon by the government of the United Provinces, now the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, to kill man-eating tigers and leopards that were preying on people in the nearby villages of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions.
He authored Man-Eaters of Kumaon, Jungle Lore, and other books recounting his hunts and experiences, which enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success. Later on in life, Corbett became an avid photographer and spoke out for the need to protect India's wildlife from extermination and played a key role in creating a national reserve for the endangered Bengal tiger, by using his influence to persuade the provincial government to establish what was called Hailey National Park. In 1957, the park was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in his honour.
Rishikesh - a destination on Holy Ganges
Ganges is the first word that comes to the mind once we name Rishikesh. Yoga is a new proposition that attracts people from different parts of the world seeking peace and mindfulness. Our journey is a combination of two corners of Uttrakhand Himalaya, almost a contrast in first instance from wild life to spiritualism, still it fascinates.
Evening we arrange a nature walk.
We start morning safari at 05:00 am in the Corbett Tiger Reserve and come back for the breakfast. You can relax for some time and we will restart the safari in some other direction of the park immediately after lunch.
We reach Rishikesh and have lunch here. In the evening we will attend Ganges Pooja (Prayer) at Parmarth Niketan temple and walk in the streets near Ram Jhulla.
